THE SOVIET-GEORGIAN FRIENDSHIP MONUMENT

Where History and Wilderness Meet

Perched amongst the lofty Caucasus Mountains on the Russian Military highway between Gudauri and the Jvari pass, the Soviet-Georgian Friendship Monument is an iconic landmark on the way to Kazbegi. The impressive half-circle concrete structure is a colorful contrast to the dark hues of the surrounding mountains. Built by the Soviets in 1983, a large mosaic depicting scenes from Russian and Georgian history spans the monument’s breadth.

The monument is impossible to miss when travelling between Tbilisi and Kazbegi. Take a private taxi from Tbilisi in order to visit on-route or alternatively take a short taxi ride from Stepantsminda. The stark Soviet design and artwork combined with the backdrop of the mighty Caucasus mountains reflect both Georgia’s rich wilderness and turbulent history. It makes for a well-worth visit before wandering deeper into the beautiful mountains.
