MOSQUES, SYNAGOGUES AND MORE

MOSQUE – The Sunni mosque, built in 1723-1735 during the reign of the Ottomans, is situated near the Botanical Garden and is the only working Muslim temple in Tbilisi, serving both Shia and Sunni Muslims.

The eight-edge minaret of the mosque grabs one's attention from afar and looks different from different angles.

CATHOLIC CHURCH – Built in 1805-1808 by Friar Philippo Foranoelli, the church is located on Abesadze Street. The Mother of God Church was restored in 1998- 1999 on the initiative of the Caucasus Apostolic Administrator Giuseppe Pasotto, and is the project of architect A. Solomnishvili.

The hall-type building is quite eclectic, with Baroque and neo-Gothic el ements mingling throughout. The gate of the western façade is in the Gothic style.

SYNAGOGUES – The L. Asatiani Street synagogue was built in 1910. Nearby, on 'Leather Row' is another functioning synagogue and on Anton Catholicos Street is a third, which was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Since 1932, a historical-ethnographic museum of Georgian Jews has been located in this last. Well worth a visit!

RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH – The Saint Alexander Nevsky Church is lo- cated on Ivane Javakhishvili Street. Built in 1864, construction was undertaken with the support of the Russian Holy Synod and the personal donations of parishoners.

In 1886, a one-storey bell tower was built at the church with gates and a stone staircase. The expansion took place upon the initiative of Ex-arch Pavel. On the territory of the church there is a house of prayer, built in 1869 by the Glamazdin family.
