WRITER'S HOUSE

Few buildings in Tbilisi hold as many historical secrets as the Writers’ House. Built in 1903 by David Sarajishvili, a famous philanthropist and founder of Georgian brandy production, the mansion became the center of cultural life in the city with regular literature and art events as well as Georgian supras.

Following sovietization, the house continued to be used by artists and writers and was even called the Palace of Arts through the 1920s. The house witnessed some tragic events during Soviet reign. Famously, poet Paolo Lashvili committed suicide on the second floor of the building. His death was often considered to be a murder by the Soviet regime rather than suicide due to the oppression at the time.

Since 2008, the Writers’ House is once again a space dedicated to Georgian Cultures. It regularly hosts cultural and artistic events. There is also a lovely cafe in the building’s garden.
