USHGULI

The Most Remote Village in Georgia

Nestled amongst the towering Caucasus mountains at 2,100 meters, Ushguli is one of the highest settlements in Europe. Arriving in Ushguli, you feel like you have stepped back in time. The roofs of defensive tower houses rise from the lush green mountain pastures, reminding of turbulent battles in past centuries. Today, the village is recognized as part of the Upper Svaneti UNESCO World Heritage Site and tourism is slowly bringing a new lease to the quiet village.

As Ushguli is one of Georgia’s most remote villages, there is no direct public transport. Many people arrive in Ushguli from Mestia by foot on the popular 4-day trek connecting the two villages. If you prefer to come by transport, you can hire a private jeep from Mestia, Kutaisi, or even Tbilisi. For those who venture to one of Georgia’s wildest places, an epic adventure awaits.
