HISTORY OF MANUSCRIPTS AT TBILISI MALL

From June 30 to July 9, head over to Tbilisi Mall and get to know the history of manuscripts, take fun photos in a special photo zone and get involved in historic and interesting activities!

On June 30, 1958, according to the decree of the Presidium of the Georgian Academy of Sciences, a scientific institute was established on the basis of the Manuscript Department of the State Museum of Georgia. It was decided to construct a building for the institute, which was finalized in 1965. From 1965 through 2006, the institute carried the name of Academic Korneli Kekelidze.

After converting into the National Center of Manuscripts, the institute lost this name, but was brought back in 2015. Now the institutions’ full name is the Korneli Kekelidze Georgian National Center of Manuscripts.

The two principal duties of the Center are to preserve-register and research manuscripts.

Hundreds of books, works of a descriptive nature, catalogues, albums, scientific monographs, greetings cards and pamphlets have been published by the employees of the Center. One of the most significant examples of typography is the historical-philological collection called “Mravaltavi” (მრავალთავი).

With the help of the National Center of Manuscripts, to celebrate Manuscript Day on June 30, the central atrium of Tbilisi Mall will host six historic manuscripts! Do not miss out on this special chance to visit Tbilisi Mall and explore the world of manuscripts!
